Starting in 2008, European´s three Capitals of Culture for the year 2010 – Pécs, Istanbul and the Ruhr area – will be organizing, for the first time, a series of joint projects on the future of public space. This dialogue of the Capitals of Culture extends Temporäre Stadt an besonderen Orten (The Temporary City at Special Locations), a series of competitions initiated by the Landesinitiative StadtBauKultur NRW and realised over the past few years in co-operation with various universities and colleges in towns and cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The university competition aims to find new, experimental ideas that contribute towards a lively and high-quality urban culture by changing or creating (temporary) urban environments, and offers students an opportunity to test their creative abilities in the real world of construction and follow their temporary (building) projects through to implementation.
The project, running from 2008 to 2010, will culminate in a competition based on the discussions between the three European Capitals of Culture for 2010: the Ruhr Area, Istanbul, and Pécs. Launched from 31 October to 5 November 2008 with an initial international symposium, and a student workshop in the stadtbauraum in Gelsenkirchen, after which further workshops will be held in Pécs (spring 2009) and Istanbul (autumn 2009). The prize-winning designs will be realised in the three European Capitals of Culture in 2010. |
